The bureau’s own roof

We are not a wire rewrite shop and we are not a foreign desk guessing from Toronto. We are a bureau. We go to the briefings, the hearings, the embassy receptions and the ugly rooms where a tariff becomes a number and a war becomes a schedule. Then we write the complete story for a Canadian reader who should not have to leave this site to finish it.

Maclean’s has had Washington in its bloodstream for a long time. The magazine opened an international bureau here when it became a newsmagazine because the American story is a Canadian story whether Ottawa likes the plot or not. Trade, the border, NORAD, energy, universities, drug prices, culture — these files do not respect the 49th parallel. In 2026 they are not even pretending to.

That is why a Washington edition exists now, under its own roof at macleans.us, with the same Maclean’s wordmark you know from macleans.ca. Same magazine. Same standards. A different time zone, a different press pass, and a mandate to explain American power without translating it into American assumptions.

Our beat is Washington as it is lived by the people who have to answer for it in Canada: auto workers, energy exporters, students, asylum officers, soldiers, cabinet ministers, families buying groceries. When the White House talks, we ask what it does to a plant in Windsor. When the Fed moves, we ask what it does to a mortgage in Mississauga. When the Pentagon briefs, we ask what it does to NORAD and to a budget in Ottawa.
